ABOUT OUR HYBRID VINES
The hybrid vine varieties Calardis Blanc and Pinotin come from a family-owned nursery in Neustadt Weinstraße, Germany, in the Palatinate region. For generations, the Freytag family has dedicated themselves to breeding exceptional grape cultivars with a deep respect for the environment. Their hybrid vines, developed through extensive research and testing, combine the best traits from classical cultivars with innovative additions, enhancing quality and resilience to suit the unique terroir of the Rose Charity Vineyard.
Freytag's commitment to preserving established cultivars while advancing viticultural techniques is evident in the superior quality of their vines. These vines, perfectly matched to this local soil and climate, represent the future of advanced, unique grape cultivation.

WHAT WINE ARE WE MAKING?
The two varieties being grown give us the potential to produce a wide variety of wines. The ultimate decision will be a function of the weather in 2026 and the behaviour of the grapes under those conditions. Some years will allow for a sparkling blanc-de-blanc (white sparkling wine) and a still red wine. Other years will yield a sparkling white as well as a sparkling rosé. Every year will bring the possibility of a fine white still wine. We will update you once we have decided in the run-up to each autumn harvest.
CALARDIS BLANC
Calardis Blanc was crossed in 1993 from the parent varieties Calardis Musqué and Seyve Villard 39-639. The grape is medium-sized and loose-grained. The colouring of the sunny berries is striking, reminiscent of Muskateller, while the berries in the shade remain yellow-green even during ripening. The wine is rich in finesse and fruity with a fine spicy bouquet and aromas of blood orange, passion fruit and apple. Due to its usually tangy acidity, it is extremely well positioned as the base for superior sparkling wines.

PINOTIN
Pinotin is the Burgundy type among the new hybrid breeds and is a cross between Pinot Noir and resistance partners. It is popular among winegrowers in all German wine regions, as well as in the Benelux countries. The grape cluster is narrow, long and very loose-berried. The berry is round, medium sized and covered with an even layer of wax. It colours early and evenly due to the loose stem structure. Pinotin is reminiscent of Pinot Noir, although it has more colour density and depth in the glass. Pinotin shows a clear, dense forest fruit aroma, soft in its tannin structure and uncomplicated in its taste. The wines are easily accessible in appeal to a broad connoisseur audience.
